A fire incident on Thursday morning at Circle Odawna in Accra destroyed about 15 wooden structures but saw more than 200 others saved, according to the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
Speaking to the media, Assistant Division Officer (ADO1) Alex King Nartey from the GNFS Public Affairs Department explained that fire officers reached the scene within five minutes, but access challenges hindered their immediate response.
“Fortunately, our team at Circle, just a few minutes away from the scene, got there in good time in about 5 minutes,” Nartey said. “The unfortunate thing was that because the fire was just at the edge of the Odawna gutter, it was difficult for them to get access to the place. The fire tender couldn’t get to the scene.”
The firefighting team quickly adapted, parking at a nearby warehouse and running their lines to reach the blaze. Their focus, Nartey noted, was on containing the fire’s spread to protect nearby structures.
“We were able to salvage over 200 wooden structures and the adjoining warehouses,” he added.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, and victims are left devastated as they assess the extent of the damage.
